When Cheri Mettille and Jason Garick, both 36, decided to tie the knot, they made plans for a small, romantic affair in Italy. “We love everything Italian,” Cheri says — “especially since Jason has roots there.” And when it came time to register, the couple knew just what they were looking for: “After living together for so many years we were well established, so we registered for items that would remind us of our time overseas,” she says. They especially sought out things with a rustic feel, and anything that was pasta-friendly. They even used some of the gift money they received to buy copper pots in a small village in Tuscany on their honeymoon. When the elderly couple who owned the shop discovered that Jason and Cheri had just been married, they toasted the newlyweds, prompting Jason to declare, “We’ll buy eight!” The lustrous cookware now hangs from the couple’s ceiling in their Manhattan apartment, making frequent trips to the stove for Jason’s impromptu dinners.

Make sure you take your whole house into account when selecting gifts — there’s more to a wedding registry than what fits in your kitchen. Cheri wishes she had registered for bed linens and blankets. Think about lamps, mirrors, candlesticks, and garden or patio accents.
