Will She Upstage Me?
Question: I've always known that I'd ask my best friend to be my maid of honour since I'm closer to her than just about anybody (except, of course, my fiancé!). The problem is that she's a 5'11" supermodel lookalike -- and I'm suddenly finding myself worried that her looks will upstage me on the big day! Am I crazy? Selfish? I feel totally guilty for even letting it cross my mind once, but I can't stop thinking about it!

There are a couple of ways to tackle this one. You could decide to swathe all your maids in head-to-toe yellow tulle, and try not to let her looks shine through. You could fib, and tell her you aren’t planning to have any honour attendants after all. Lastly, you can tackle your feelings head on (guess which answer we suggest!). Though your feelings make you uncomfortable, they aren’t unnatural. You just need to refocus and remember why one has bridesmaids in the first place — it’s a wedding, not a beauty pageant! Those women (and men) line up beside you and your fiancé because they’ve loved you, supported you, and been there for you through thick and thin. You’ve already stated the most important reason why you should ask your friend to be your maid of honour: because you feel closest to her. If you’re still feeling nervous, don’t forget that you will be the one in the gown, and chances are that no matter what woman stands next to you, your husband-to-be will still say without a doubt that you are the most beautiful woman in the world. Should you find yourself feeling jittery when you’re at the altar, you’ll feel better having a friend like her by your side.
