Okay For An Older Bride?

Question: I'm 37, and I'll soon be marrying for the first time (I'll actually be 38 by the time I get married). I wanted to ask a few friends to be my bridesmaids, but when I mentioned it to a friend, she acted surprised and rather rudely indicated that she thought I was too old for bridesmaids. It's really gotten to me -- is she right?

Think of it this way: Are you ever too old to have friends who stick by you, and who you would want by your side on such an important day in your life? Your friend’s comments were very insensitive, and you shouldn’t let her words get you down. You’ve waited a long time for this, and you should feel entitled to do things the way that make you feel happiest. No bride should feel she has to forego the bridesmaid experience.

If you think they might be uncomfortable wearing matching dresses, you could go for something more subtle, such as having them each wear their own black dress or opting for bridesmaid dresses that come in various styles (strapless, halter, three-quarter length sleeves) in the same colour palette, so they can feel more comfortable.

I will also be 38 when I marry for the first time in April 2010, and have 3 bridesmaids, 1 married, 1 never married and 1 divorced. The only one who was concerned was the never married friend who will also be 40 next year, so she needed a little time to get her head around it, but all 3 were thrilled to be part of our wedding and really really supportive. Ask the people you want, who you know you will have a great time with and who are there for you, no judgements!!

I’m 38 and will get married in December and i’ve asked 3 girls to be my brides maids, they were delighted and cried when i asked them at my engagement party. I think your “friend” was heartless, like the editor said, you’ve waited a long time for this so do exactly what you want and have the time of your life. I sure intend on doing so! Good luck xxxx

I hope the invitation has been rescinded and given to someone more supportive! I’m a slightly younger bride, but my mid-30s bridesmaid is super-excited that she finally gets to fill those shoes, she’s never been a bridesmaid but always wanted to.
