Annabel & Neil: A British Vintage-Themed Wedding in Shropshire, UK

The bride’s childhood home played host to their informal, vintage wedding.

  • Annabel & Neil’s British Vintage-Themed Wedding – Bride & Groom

    The bride: Annabel Allen, 30, PA & office manager
    The groom: Neil Hitchen, 29, senior fire engineer
    The date: 1st September

    They met at university in Edinburgh and after a year “the spark was obvious to all!,” Annabel laughs.Years later, in Sydney, the couple enjoyed a horse ride in the Blue Mountains followed by a walk around the ranch. At sunset Neil got down on one knee and uttered those long awaited words!

    They exchanged vows in a country church five minutes from the family farm and reception venue. A bagpiper piped them back up the aisle to ‘Flower of Scotland.’

    Annabel wore a beaded, art deco-style sheath dress. Her two bridesmaids wore sage green silk dresses while the maid of honour wore a strapless cream dress in a similar style. Annabel added art deco dress clips to all of their dresses.

    The page boys and wore kilts in Neil’s family tartan.

    Annabel’s hair was pinned up loosely for an informal look. Instead of a comb the bride made a beaded wire head piece.

    The reception was held in a marquee at the bride’s family home – a place they both hold dear to their hearts. Annabel’s mum created the centrepieces to fit an informal, natural and British brief. Silver cups, ink wells, teapots, tankards and jugs from the bride’s father’s antique collection dotted the long trestle tables.

    For their invitations, the couple wanted to express their love of travel and combine it with a vintage theme.

    The wedding cake was made up of three single-tiered cakes. “We didn’t want a traditional white cake but one that just looked really yummy!”

    To and from the church they travelled in an old Rolls Royce which they borrowed from neighbours.

    Handmade bunting featured a letter on each triangle. The seating plan was arranged alphabetically.

    The bride gathered the bridesmaid’s flowers which featured eucalyptus (to match their dresses and represent Australia) with blue thistles (to nod to Scotland where the groom is from) and white lisianthus.
