Destination Guide: Phuket, Thailand

Thailand is a beautiful tropical destination and very popular amongst newlyweds. The warm weather, luxury resorts and relaxing atmosphere is perfect for those wanting to unwind and enjoy a romantic honeymoon. Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and is bursting with beautiful beaches.

Where to go

Patong Beach
Patong Beach Road is the most central part of Patong Beach, with the pristine beach on one side and many amazing resorts and little market stalls lining the other. There’s plenty to see and do in this central location like bartering with the locals over ‘designer’ shoes and summer clothing. You can’t go to Phuket without a walk down Bangla Road. A truly unique experience, Bangla Road comes to life at night with the street lined with ladyboys, cabaret dancers and plenty of tourists bewildered by the sights! Patong is the place to be if you want to be closest to everything and mix partying and play with your desire to unwind.

Knot tip: Patong Beach is a great place to stay and is close to the action. But if you want to be nearby while still enjoying the peace and quiet, we recommend staying at one of the resorts at the northern and southern ends. Try Avantika Boutique Hotel. This 4 star boutique hotel on the south end is popular amongst couples because of the quiet location and has only 31 rooms.

Other beaches
Phuket is full of beautiful beaches and surrounding resorts, so if all you want from your honeymoon is to stay close to your room and enjoy the resort facilities away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist destinations, then opt for one of the other beaches, such as Bang Tao Beach, Mai Khao Beach and Surin Beach.

What to do

No matter what type of activity you want to do, you can find plenty of fun things to do in Phuket. Here are some of our favourites for honeymooners:

Romantic day trip
While staying at Phuket, an overnight trip via speedboat to Phi Phi Island is a must. On one of the world’s most beautiful islands you and your fiancé can enjoy the snorkelling, shopping and serenity, as well take a look at Maya Bay –the location where ‘The Beach’ was filmed.

Something for everyone
Drop by the Blue Canyon Golf Course to see one of the best 18-course golf courses, which is surrounded by greenery and mountains. While your husband enjoys a round of golf, treat yourself to a massage at their top-rated spa.

Adventure time
Get outdoors and prepare for an adventurous day. Try white water rafting down the lush Phang Nga Province between June and November, or trekking on an elephant through the jungle. Both will be unforgettable experiences.

Tropical activities
When you’re paying for a beautiful hotel with incredible pools, constant sunshine and great bars there’s little reason to leave the property. Plan to spend a lot of time just lazing by the pool, sipping cocktails and enjoying the friendly service! If you want to get out and about, consider taking a diving course or simply booking a boat trip for the day to go snorkelling. The water is guaranteed to always be warm and the sunshine rarely stops shining.

Spa heaven
Finding the perfect place for some well-deserved spa treatments is not hard in Phuket. Just about every resort offers a luxurious spa complete with a range of treatments. Expect to pay more for one of the resort spas, which sometimes charge in US dollars. Don’t be afraid to find a local boutique around town for a much cheaper, and just as good, massage or facial. If you’re looking for the best of the best, try the Banyan Tree, JW Marriott Resort & Spa, and the Aspara Spa at Phuket Holiday Inn.

Where to stay

Phuket is full of beautiful resorts and you’d be crazy not to stay in one of them. Choose from the many 5 star hotels, complete with world-class spas and numerous swimming pools.

Knot recommendations: JW Marriott Resort & Spa, Trisara Phuket Resort, Six Senses Hideaway Yao Noi, and Banyan Tree Phuket.

Of course Phuket’s 3 and 4 star hotels are just as good. We like Banthai Beach Resort & Spa, Impiana Phuket Cabana, and Cape Sienna Phuket Hotel & Villas.

Where to eat

Since Phuket is a tourist destination, you will be spoilt for dining choices. If you are staying at Patong Beach, all you need to do is wander Patong Beach Road and you will find a wide selection of cuisines to choose from. We recommend embracing the Thailand culture and enjoying the local dishes whenever possible.
