Wedding Cake or Cupcakes?

Hi knoties!
I was wondering what everyone is doing in terms of their cake! I’ve been quoted anywhere from 370+ for my cake however the venue has said they charge $7 per slice to cut it up, put it on a plate with a little bit of cream and a strawberry. I was wondering would it be easier to get cupcakes and get my ring bearer/ bridesmaids to hand them out? The other thing is what would we cut as our cake?

I like cup cakes…easier to take home if I am stuffed from dinner. But that said you can’t really cut a cup cake so you might have to skip that part or have a small cutting cake?
However are you sure your venue still wont charge you the serving fee? I can’t see them missing out on the opportunity to chagre you extra. I think the fee covers the dishes and spoons and cleaning etc not just the serving.
And honestly I don’t think I would want a strangers child (or even one I know) handing me a cup cake. Kids are germ banks and are not always known for their hygiene (think noses, licking icing/chocolate off fingers etc). Also kids have short attention spans so they might get bored very quickly and then you will have to get someone to take over! Also you want the bridesmaid to enjoy the night not have to work! You might just have them set up on a table and get everyone to grab their own?

Getting the bridesmaids to distribute the cupcakes would be a wonderful idea. Another idea would be to have the cupcake tower (after you have cut the top cutting cake), sit beside the tea and coffee so that your guests can help themselves.
One of my clients (I am a cake artist), ordered a 3-tier cake (two were dummies with only the top one being real cake). This was cut at the reception and then she got her mother to take the kitchen cakes to her suite and slice these up, served it on a platter and set it next to the tea/ coffee. You can only get away with this, if you have a buffet style wedding NOT a sit-down meal.
