Does anyone know where I can get my teeth whitened in Brisbane? I don’t want to spend $1000 but I want something more effective than those DIY home jobs. any recommendations?

hey there miss_ash. i used a take home pack from my beauticians - i think bedazzled?!?! cost about $100. I put it on for 20 minutes twice a day and the results were spectacular!

I used it before my OS trip last year and i will definitley be topping it up again in the leadup to my big day !

Chat to your dentist. I spoke with mine about it, David Hogan who is in the Queen St Mall (http://www.hogandental.com.au) -he’s REALLY good, and he took my moulds and ordered me professional teeth whitening products. It cost about $500 but I have private health insurance and got about half of it back! You get plenty of the teeth whitening gel so it will last you ages too. Once you get your teeth to the desired colour, I find the at-home kits do a great job of maintaining the colour.

1: They are called a Beauty Therapist, not a Beautician. A Beautician is only Certificate II Qualified (which is done in tafe for two months at one day per week) and can only do basic manicure, basic facial, basic waxing and are generally not employed in salons. Beauty Therapists are Diploma Qualified (which is done in a Private college for around $16’000 and completed in one year at three days per week), and are usually found in salons & are able to start up their own business. No you shouldn’t be going to any beauty therapist for anything to do with teeth, as we do not learn anything about teeth in the Diploma. That is a dental hygeinist job. That’s why they spend 4 years in university for a degree and Beauty Therapists only 1 year for a diploma (degree obviously being a higher qualification). I am a Beauty Therapist, my sister is a Dental Hygeinist.

Things you should also not be getting done in a beauty salon:

IPL/Laser unless they are certificate qualified (which costs $5’000 and is only acheivable at three colleges in Australia, my college being one of them). They will be a law coming soon about the need for a certificate qualification to perform IPL/Laser.

ANY Injectables. Injectables are only to be performed by a nurse or a doctor. Beauty Therapist skin knowledge is not that great of the underlying tissue or the deep muscles where the needle is injected. It doesn’t matter if they are a beauty therapist with more knowledge about the skin, if they are not a nurse, they are not qualified. Also soon, a new law will be coming out where nurses will not be allowed to do any injectables and only doctors can perfom this.

ANY facial peels. We only learn basic peels and since peels are about taking the first layer of skin off, sometimes even the second layer of skin is burnt off, it is not advisable to go  to a salon to get this done as we are not properly trained. Again, only a nurse or a doctor are legally allowed to perform these treatments.

Legally, all waxing is a 1 dip only system, so no double dipping of a spatula. Wooden spatula are to be used for waxing. We can use one end once, wrap a tissue around the used end, then use the other end, then thow it out. No one is allowed to use the same spatula twice as this can cause many bacterial & fungal infections/diseases, most common is folliculitis (a bacterial infection of the follicle, looks like a massive pimple with a white head, inflammed around the follicle, usually sore) and is spred through the transfer of skin cells. Even if they only use one spatula on the same person then change it for another person, it is still illegal. Must be one dip per end of the spatula. Also, during waxing, gloves must be worn during brazillians.

Also, waxing done at hair salon: definately a no. They are not qualified to do waxing, waxing is a 3 days per weeks for 3 months course. Plus they need all knowledge of skin as well to completely pass the module. Just because they deal with hair on the head (thus, the hair on the outside of the head) does not qualify them to pull hair out of the skin.

I do not care how well you know your beauty therapist or your hairdresser, all of the mentioned above are illegal and come with massive fines as well a possible shut down of business. If you turn a blind eye, you are helping them get away with it and what our industry needs is more knowledge spread throughout our client base for our clients’ own benefit, otherwise our industry will still stay in the “beautician” way of thinking and practises instead of moving forward as a trade.
