Seating Chart

Is it entirely necessary to have a seating chart displayed at our reception if we only have a total of 46 guests and 5 tables?
Our guests will be in our reception room for pre-dinner canapes, so could they find their own seats or should I organise a chart?
What does everyone think?

There are pros and cons for seating charts
Pro- people know where to sit
Pro- the wait staff can find guests to give them their meal 9if you are having plated meal serve)
Pro- no odd tables as in couples split up because they happen to get to a table last etc
Cons- they are extra work
You could just have escort cards- this is basically their name place seating on a table that they collect. it has their table number on it and is usually coded for the wait staff so they know which meal was chosen ie a red flower for chicken, a green for veggie etc
We didn’t have place cards or assigned seating- we just had one long table (24 guests) and everyone sat where they wanted. It worked fine but we had an unusual reception setting.
Other options would be assigned seating with place cards at the guests seat!
