Planning while living in seperate islands (NZ)

I’m living up in the North Island of NZ with FHs family and he moved to Christchurch at the begining of the year just after we got engaged. I’m finding planning to be hard because I don’t want to make any hard and fast decisions without input from him and he can only get so much of an idea from websites. Can I ask, is anyone else dealing with something similar or did you while engaged and planning and how did you make it easier?
