Marquee Wedding. Where do I start?

Sun 31 Jul 2011 11:27AM posts 7

I’ve been trying to find a venue which will allow me to byo food and alcohol but I’m having serious trouble. I’ve decided I might start looking into hiring a marquee, but then I don’t know where I would put it! I’d really like to hear from people who have had a marquee wedding. I’d like to know:

1. How do you find land to put it on (do you just ask randoms?)

2. How do you get power to your marquee?

3. Anything else you think I should know about having a marquee reception.

We want to get married in Ipswich, Brisbane or on the Gold Coast. I have no idea where or how to start looking. Please help!

I am in the same boat, I’m wanting the exact same thing also and I’m finding it very difficult!  If you have any luck, let me know.  I will post anything I find too.

im doing the same thing in adelaide, try asking friends if they know anyone with land that you could hire for the day, or even just drive around the country with a letter and if you see any land that looks promising leave the owner a copy of the letter in their mailbox..

the letter can just introduce yourself and what you need from them, you could mention a figure you wanted to pay for the venue or leave it to them to make a first offer?

power to the marquee = generators? you can get some really quiet ones now, you just hire them for the day and use that to run all your electricity

my wedding isnt for another year and a half at least but ive already started planning it all (because im just really fussy and determined to get it just right) and ive come up with alot of suppliers in my area and things that i need for the wedding…this has helped alot and ive been able to start creating a pretty inclusive budget.

things to think about:

where caters can cook?

toliets or portaloos?

mobile coolrooms?

water access? (for dishwashing etc)

the sort of meal you want to serve and how this can be best used in a marquee?

sorry ive talked so much but i hope its somewhat useful to you :) xxjaz

If you’re wanting to BYO alcohol and food to save costs, just keep in mind that marquee weddings are often more expensive as you have to bring everything in – it all adds up. Amore Gardens in Currumbin Valley do BYO alocohol but not sure about food.

Hi all,

Im planning on having a marquee wedding aswell. I live out in the country but am hiring a small patch at the local showground/racecourse. This way there are toilets, water and electricity all quite close. Also depending on your grounds a lot have quite nice gardens etc in the background.

There is also a building only a hop, skip and jump away that contains a full commercial kitchen so the caterers only need food and some utensils.

I have googled a local party hire place and they can supply marquee, linen, cutlery, crockery etc etc with no problems

Hope this helps :)

Don’t forget that town halls, yacht clubs and bowling clubs often offer the choice to BYO food and alcohol.

And even if some of them have their own bar, the prices are usually heaps cheaper than a function centre.

You can still make the room your own & style it up, but also then have toilets, a kitchen, parking, electricity, PA/music already on site.

Good luck – my fiance and I are in the same boat, we are thinking we’d like to BYO alcohol and then get a caterer for the food.
