Hi,

I have quite oily skin, and do not usually wear foundation.  I’m getting married on the beach, so add some sun and a little persperation and I have no idea what to do!!  I’ve just had a make-up trial with MAC, everything was great but the foundation seemed a bit much.

Does anyone have any recommendations please?  Thank you!

Use a light, oil-free moisturising lotion before make-up, and if your skin is in good shape ask for just a light dusting of translucent powder to help keep down any shine, in place of the heavy foundation.  Be wary of sunscreen, even though it’s kind of a must for beach weddings, it can leave you looking shiny in photos so my photographer recommended nothing with sunscreen on the day.  A dusting of powder should help though.  Also, make sure it’s not a mineral powder – ask for something matt and specifically intended for being photographed, as matt make-up gets the best results in the photos.

I’d also recommend you pick up some blotting papers (around $5 from priceline or the body shop) to have handy throughout the day.  Just pat over your face just before and after the ceremony, during photos if you’re feeling oily etc.  They won’t remove your make-up or add cakey powder, just absorb the oil and leave you shine free.  In a pinch, you can use toilet paper but it doesn’t work quite as well and can take some of the make-up with it.

If it doesn’t upset MAC, maybe try some independent make up artists, freelancers normally have more experience and they tend to put more effort in.

You could always try a mineral make up. I am a Beauty Therapist and i work with YoungBlood mineral cosmetics. They have a powder foundation that would help prevent your skin from looking oily. I have oily skin and i will be using it on my wedding day. I know i might sound biased as i work with there cosmetics but they won’t make your skin feel like you have a mountain of make up on.

Definitely need to apply a foundation primer underneath! I am a makeup artist, and would never do a makeup (especially on a bride) without using one (try laura mericer oil free primer – it is for extra oily skin). It will make your makeup stay flawless and not move all day. Which will also mean you don’t need to apply as much foundation.

If you have good skin and don’t need much coverage try the Laura Mercier Oil free tinted moisturiser. Since your going to be outside, It would be great as it has an spf 20 (which despite you normally having to be carefull of spf’s not photographing well – all laura mericer products are ‘camera ready’ and I use it all the time for brides, photo shoots and TV.

Lastly you definitly need to set with a translucent powder. this will set your makeup and control excess shine. Press it onto your skin using a powder puff rather than a brush – this will set your skin much more effectively.

Hope that helps!
