How long after the wedding?

I’m curious as to whether people leave to go on their honeymoon immediately after the reception is finished or if you wait a few months or more. This detail has fascinated me for some time.

We’re having a destination wedding Sept next year. All our family, including our children will be there. So that wont be much of a HM for us! So we’re planning on saving for a HM cruise for early Jan-Feb.

we have two young children and the idea of staying away from them for longer than a week scares me, so the night of the wedding we’ll be staying in a hotel, then go see the kids and after dinner we are setting off to stay in a spa and retreat for 2 nights to unwind from the craziness, then 3 months later we are going up to the whitsundays for a week which will be our real honey moon, it will be abit warmer since we’re having a winter wedding and gives us abit of time to save (and i think ill get abit of wedding blues after so i need something else to plan lol)

We will spend the wedding night in a nearby B&B then head off to Tasmania the next day for three weeks. We’ll probably do a bigger OS holiday in a couple of years, but we wanted our honeymoon to be relaxed and intimate, and not to have to worry about seeing all the sights if all we wanted to do was laze around all day. It’s also less stress while you’re organising the wedding and means we can save a bit of money but also get better quality accommodation since we won’t have to spend so much on travel.

Our wedding is in mid-November 2011 and we are planning our American honeymoon for about June, 2012. Some that we’ve told seem really confused at this 7 month gap and with the amount of times I’ve heard things like ‘but, your atleast going for a little one right after the wedding right?’ makes me think that maybe a honeymoon has to be right after the wedding to be a proper honeymoon but it’s ultimately our choice and that’s what we want to do to make sure we make the most out of our time away.

We are getting married on Friday, 11 November 2011 and are staying at the resort where our wedding is on the wedding night. We will probably spend the Saturday night at our own home and then leave for our honeymoon on the Sunday. We don’t know where we’re going yet…should probably get that sorted soon…lol
