lol i had the opposite problem, all i wanted was a place for around 100 guest and they all had a max of 80, im probly going for a different style of wedding though (im also on the other side of melbourne) we’re having a more relaxed elegant casual if thats possible lol, so im doing all the fancy sorta stuff with the sit down meals but the place we ended up deciding on was actually a restaurant that hires out the whole room, that way we got yummy food but i didnt have to do it in a hall or something, so maybe look around for places with function rooms, and ask if they have done weddings before and if they hav photo’s you will be surprised at how nice they turn out… but if your not like me and have the money, i went to a wedding 2 years ago that was at the park hiat and that only had about 100-120 guest, they do all sizes, but that would probly be rather expensive…

anyway goodluck!

We’re having our reception at the Melbourne Aquarium in the fish bowl room that fits around 100 comfortably. There are other rooms like the upper deck or jellies rooms that would suit smaller numbers as well.

A lot of the old hiostorical houses only fit smaller groups (not that 70 is small) under 100 people. Try Ripponlea, como house, werribe mansion. there are a few more that I can not remember try the national trust or hertiage Vic website.

And along the lines of CourtneyAlise you could try one of Melbournes zoo’s.

I also think the old melbourne goal rents out for weddings.

I looked at a place called Baroque (SP?) House which is in the city and it was lovely but woudl not fit the people need for our reception.

There is also a private school in Sunbury I think that has a historic mansion and I think other private schools have similar buildings for rent.

I also recently went to a lavender farm on the way to portsea that had beautiful gardens and I thought would be the perfect place for an outside wedding and reception!

Try restaurants there is a few that will do 70 guests in the CBD or even function rooms at bars/pubs or hotels. I am having mine with 74 guest at the bay in mordialloc in their function room.

Hi.. I had my reception at Nelsons restaurant in Williamstown…

We only had 45 people and it was amazing.. they have an upstairs venue, with stunning views of the city at night which makes for amazing photos….Wasn’t overly pricey either, but that wasn’t an issue for us, my husband and I fell inlove with the venue.. Megan, the owner, couldn’t possibly be more helpful and came up with some great ideas and suggestions. I could go on about the venue all day, we are both looking forward to celebrating another special occasion there… seriously think about it.. the website isn’t fantastic, could do with updating, but oif you have the time, drop in and have a look… AMAZING!

Hope that helps…

Hey there,

Have you tried The Willows on St Kilda Road?

There is also a small place called Gardens House which is catered by Peter Rowland. It only sits 48 but can have cocktails for up to 120.

Another small venue is 171 Dorcas Street. It’s designed for up to 100 guests, but I’m not sure if that’s sit down or cocktail. It’s got nice modern feel about it.

Good luck! Vanessa

Hi there, we also had the opposite problem – we wanted a small and intimate venue, but we have too many guests. Depending on the style of your wedding and your list of priorities, how about a nice restaurant? Or better still, YOUR favourite restaurant??

There are lots of beautiful ones in the city and surrounds (and further out) that can accommodate smaller groups (80 guests).  We looked at the following…

  • The Italian (City)
  • Church Street Enoteca (Richmond)
  • Comme (City)
  • The Deck at The Prince Hotel (St Kilda)

Good luck!
