Hi everyone.

I am planning to have my reception at a venue on Mt Tambourine in QLD (40 mins drive from Brisbane) and am now concerned that people will not come because of the 40 min drive. My mother has said that its wrong to expect people to travel that far… but I don’ think it’s that bad! I’m now upset and confused and angry because I’ve been told to change everything I want to suit other people – from food to guest attire and now the venue… Please – any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Nina,

40 minutes is not far at all! We are having a destination wedding and guests will travel from all over Australia. Lots of people travel 40 minutes to get to work every day, so 40 minutes to get to one of the most important events in your life is not far at all! Dont stress, people will always share their opinions about your wedding planning, but that doesnt mean they are all right!

If that’s where you want to get married, do it! I’ve travelled further for stuff. If you are really worried about it, maybe look at putting on a couple of busses. My friend is getting married 45 minutes from our home town, I’m staying at the venue as I’m a bridesmaid, but my parents are coming and probably driving home afterwards, and haven’t lifted an eyebrow about it. It’s your wedding, not your mums or anyone elses!

I live about 40 minutes out of sydney city (as do most of the people i know) and travel that far to get to most weddings! And most events! I don’t see it as being that big of a drama, and if someone isnt willing to put in 40 minutes of driving to witness and enjoy your wedding then they dont deserve to be there!

As well as offering buses you could also provide some information on accomodation in case guests would like to stay for the weekend. I know there is lots up there at Tamborine!

I would personally travel as far away as 2 hours if not more for a wedding of someone i love and care about. I have family all over victoria and we are having our wedding where we want it, if they can’t be bothered making the trip then it shows how much they want to be there.

That said buses and accomodation details for your guests i think are a great idea. My reception is 15minutes from my house yet most of us are staying there, that way we dont have to worry about drinking and who is gonna drive home etc.
