Engagement parties are usually held right after the engagement or within a few months.
Personally I would side eye an invite to a party over a year after the couple got engaged and to me it would feel like they were having a party to get presents (unless there was some spectacular reason like one of them was in Afghanistan, had major health issues that had them in hospital or they were living overseas helping starving children in the Sudan).

Hi mummyC, we’re having our engagement party 10 months later, and our friends and family are really happy for us! Personally, I always want other people’s relationships to go well, so I’m happy to celebrate an engagement party anytime they want, and I’m always going to be happy for them. It’s about you two, and if your friends and family love you, I reckon you can celebrate your engagement whenever you’re ready!

To help with the ‘searching for presents’ thoughts, maybe ask for no presents? I know that every time you ask for no presents, somebody always brings something. Other than that, just say that now the wedding is book and is getting closer you’re getting really excited, and want to celebrate! There’s nothing wrong with excitement and celebration!
Also, in relation to presents, if you are actually needing help with paying for the wedding, having some people pay for parts of the wedding for you as your gits always helps cut down costs. Eg. Parents pay for the cake, in-laws pay for the car hire, etc.
