DIY for an international destination

Our wedding is set for June 2014 in Fiji and at the moment we are starting to set up a budget and allocate funds. Our initial estimate is heart stopping so we are looking at ways to reduce it drastically.
Has anyone made or purchased and taken their own table decorations etc to their destination? Some of their settings look really easy and simple to create cheaply (via ebay etc).
What else have you been able to DIY or cut out to reduce costs to your destination wedding?

Most DIY was impossible for our DW but we did make our own invites (passport invites) which saved a boat load.
We basically picked a place that was already decorative so that we didn’t have to decorate the tables. Well we did decorate them- but in booze.
A lot of the other brides on the vegas wedding forum shipped their DIY to their reception place. You could maybe check that out but I think shipping to Fiji can be expensive.
What about using paper flowers or paper lanterns. These fold down really easy and wont break easily. And then the only set up is a tea light candle/LCD candle or folding the flowers? You can even string the lanterns. or candles you cold ship them easily?
Does the reception site have a great view of the jungle or beach? If so I don’t think you will need to do too much because the backdrop will be breathtaking enough. Just a few simple touches.

Our venue is a small island resort with a lovely view of the jungle and the beach so your right in saying we won’t need to do much. I was thinking along the lines of either pillar candles or floating candles and satin flowers but I love the idea of the fold down lanterns. I will look into that. As for shipping we will probably take everything in a suitcase with us. We won’t need much in the way of normal clothing so we will have plenty of room and it will save on postage. Thank you j_jaye, you always have brilliant ideas.

Hey bec
We have made quite a bit of DIY dec’s for our samui wedding next month. Like jjaye says, the setting speaks for itself-but, we really wanted some cute personal decorations and touches that make it a little more us.
We bought things like retro fruit drinking straws and pineapple lights on eBay (for a bit of kitch personality) and also have designed and printed our own name cards , and seating poster. we have made a few more things and like you, will easily shove it in a suitcase (or our friends!)
