Dark purple flower crisis!

Wed 3 Feb 2010 04:13AM posts 6

Hi all,

I have quite simple dark purple bridesmaids dresses and are struggling to find classy and simple flowers that will compliment them but not be over the top.

I was thinking white flowers (eg. orchids or lillies) with a touch of purple. The only problem is apparently the only dark purple flowers that will be available in March are lisianthus and irisus (which I am not too fussed on either).

Does anyone know of any alternatives? I am happy for the bridesmaids to have plain white bouquets if need be but I think mine might look better with a bit of colour given my dress is white (or ivory I should say). ANy thoughts?

The darkest purple flowers available are generally calla lillies and tulips – they’re both black varieties (which is super-deep purple) and look gorgeous and very elegant.  although both are winter flowers you can sometimes get some of these flowers earlier.  Check with you local florists who might be able to source them for you.

Hi Ren,

Have you looked at black magic roses? They’re a beautiful dark colour and are usually available all year round. Hope this helps :)

How dark are the dresses, cause you may find that the flowers actually get lost in the dresses if same color…..i had dark purple dresses and did use lisianthus with a mix of roses which i was REALLY not keen on at first, but my florist scrunched the flowers so they were closed and you could just see the deep purple poking out….if you want check out my photos, sorry not a really great shot of bouquets but actually have not gotten my pro pics back yet, this is all she has given me so far http://melindahirdphotography.blogspot.com/ ….might give you an idea…should get photos back soon though….otherwise i could email you a photo

Thanks everyone, some really great suggestions - Sandra D, you won’t believe it but I have the exact same wedding dress as you! (except ivory instead of silver)! You and your bridal party look stunning and the flowers worked really well thanks for sharing them with me. My bridesmaids dresses are a similar colour to yours so hopefully I can find some similar flowers at the markets when I go to look in a few weeks time!
